The evening primrose originally comes from eastern and central North America. The indigenous people there used it as a medicinal plant.[1]
It was first introduced to Europe in the 17th century as an ornamental plant. Its beneficial effects were only discovered here later. Occasionally, the evening primrose was also referred to as the "railroad plant", as its seeds were often carried in the cargo of trains, which contributed to its spread.
Evening primrose oil has been investigated in various studies that have found clinical benefit for use in rheumatoid athritis.[2]
In addition, taking evening primrose oil for 12 weeks improves the skin's moisture, elasticity, firmness, resistance to fatigue and roughness.[3]
